The neighborhood of Highlands, located within the hillside community of MacDonald Highlands, offers one-third acre and one-half acre custom lots with views of the city and mountains. The views provided by these lots are protected through the community's design guidelines, according to Rich MacDonald, president of MacDonald Cos., the developer of MacDonald Highlands. "And the neighborhood is bordered by one of the community's three planned parks, (which is) great for families with active children," MacDonald said. The lots in the Highlands neighborhood are priced from $169,000 to $350,000, and many of them are terraced into the hillside. Other lots are flat, which is ideal for buyers who prefer a single-story home with space for a yard and swimming pool, MacDonald said. In addition, some of the lots face the mountains while others overlook a park. Three homes are available for sale at Highlands, each of which is in the final stage of construction and ready for preview. The homes range from 4,300 to 6,000 square feet and are priced from $1.2 million to $1.5 million. The 4-acre park at Highlands will be landscaped with canopy shade trees, multi-trunk flowering trees, shrubs, flowers and grass areas. Additional features will include a gazebo, picnic area and play area. The park is under construction and scheduled to open late this fall. The purchase of a custom lot within the Highlands neighborhood includes an equity social membership in DragonRidge, a private equity golf and country club that is the central amenity of MacDonald Highlands. The course opened for play last May, and a permanent clubhouse is scheduled to open in fall 2001 with a golf shop, an exercise and spa facility, a swimming pool, dining room, mixed grill and lounge, and locker rooms. The community's three parks will encompass about 10 acres with tennis and volleyball courts, play areas and picnic facilities. Five miles of fitness trails will also be developed. When complete, MacDonald Highlands will contain about 500 custom homes in a two-square-mile area. Seven custom neighborhoods are under development, with home sites ranging from one-third acre to more than two acres. Lots in these neighborhoods are priced from $135,000 to nearly $2 million. To visit the site, take Interstate 215 to Valle Verde Drive, turn south, proceed to Horizon Ridge Parkway and follow the signs. The sales office is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
