Summerlin scoops up funds for ballet troupe
Hundreds of gallons of ice cream will help keep things cool in Summerlin during the 13th annual All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival. The benefit for Nevada Ballet Theatre will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at The Gardens Park, located on Town Center Drive between Desert Inn Road and Twain Avenue. Ice cream sundaes, cones and floats will be served during the festival, which is expected to attract nearly 10,000 people. Also planned are children's dance performances, face painting, games, musical entertainment, balloons and an appearance by the master-planned community's mascot, Summerlin Sam. This is the fourth year the ice cream festival will benefit Nevada Ballet Theatre, a nonprofit organization and teaching academy in Summerlin. It is the only professional ballet company in the state. Admission to the festival is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, and $3 for children 5 and older. Children under 5 are admitted free. The Howard Hughes Corp. is among the festival's sponsors. Developed by Hughes Corp., Summerlin has been ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community nine of the past 10 years, according to independent surveys by Robert Charles Lesser & Co. Situated along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, the community is being developed in villages. It is home to eight golf courses, nearly 100 parks, nearly 100 miles of trails, 16 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 100 model homes. Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom lots ranging from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the high $300,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $1.5 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s. To visit the community's home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara and turn north on Town Center Drive. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
