Space aces choose Sun City
After careers in the aerospace industry, Mary Wysong and her husband, Mel Shellman, left California's San Fernando Valley and moved to Sun City Anthem ub Henderson. A couple for 30 years, Wysong and Shellman came to Las Vegas to get married. The next day they bought their home at the age-qualified community. "We used to visit Las Vegas for long weekends and vacations," Wysong said. "When we started looking at retirement locations across the country, we finally decided on Southern Nevada for its great weather and ... location, making it easy to travel. This is an extremely desirable area. We're lucky to be here." Wysong said living at the community has been fun. "Meeting people is very easy," she said. "We've had potluck dinners with neighbors, and Mel is entering the poker tournament here next month." They have met other former aerospace industry employees and get together with them monthly. Central to the community is Anthem Center, which houses special events, club meetings and Trumpets Restaurant, which is open to the public. The facility also contains a fitness center with exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, walking tracks and wellness programs. "We especially like the cardio equipment and the walking track. It's a fantastic view of the valley from the walking track and especially valuable to have an indoor track in the winter," she said. The community is located in the foothills of Black Mountain and is home to the Revere at Anthem Golf Club, which offers the Lexington and the Concord courses. Priced from the low $200,000s to more than $500,000, homes range from 1,496 to 3,175 square feet. "I'm impressed with the Del Webb warranty program and the quality of home construction," Shellman said. "I can't say enough about the great customer service, especially the online resources." To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
