Lot variations abound at MacDonald Highlands
Ken and Susan Schmutz found the ideal location to build their custom home in MacDonald Highlands in Henderson. "We liked the community and the unique topography and style of homes offered at MacDonald Highlands," said Ken Schmutz, a podiatrist who has practiced in the Las Vegas Valley for 25 years. "And our home site allowed us to build the home we've always wanted." The longtime Southern Nevadans built a 4,000-square foot single-story house. Designed by local architect Kevin Thistle and built by Ballard Construction, the home includes a koi pond near the entry, room for the couple's two adult sons and a 1,700-square-foot, four-car garage that accommodates their boat and recreational equipment. "Another reason we like MacDonald Highlands is the community's proximity to Lake Mead, where we enjoy spending time," Susan Schmutz said. "Whether it's a dramatic cliff, hidden canyon, flat mesa or beautiful golf course lot, MacDonald Highlands has something to offer those wishing to build a private estate," said Rich MacDonald, president of MacDonald Cos. Upon completion, the 1,200-acre community will feature 17 neighborhoods. Currently, there are eight custom-home neighborhoods under development. Lots offering views of the city, mountain and DragonRidge Country Club golf course range in price from $186,000 to more than $3.5 million. Lochmere features home sites measuring from one-quarter acre to one-half acre with golf course, lake and waterfall views. Prices start at $291,000. The Highlands features custom lots ranging from about one-third acre to one-half acre. Prices start at $198,000. "The Highlands neighborhood offers some of the best lots in the Las Vegas Valley, as many Southern Nevadans discovered while attending the Street of Dreams," MacDonald said. Palisades One and Two, which feature varying topography, provide larger hillside lots ideal for multi-level homes. Palisades Three will feature flat sites just off the golf course. Palisades lots range from roughly one-half acre to 2 1/2 acres. Prices start at $305,000. For a limited time, those purchasing lots in Palisades III will receive full golf membership to DragonRidge. The natural slopes and arroyos of the mountains were incorporated into the country club's design. Construction is expected to begin soon on the clubhouse, which will feature a golf shop, exercise facility, swimming pool, lounge and dining opportunities. A temporary clubhouse is open and tee times are available. In addition, the community's master plan includes linear parks and three parks encompassing about 10 acres that will feature tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; play areas; and picnic facilities. There also will be several miles of fitness trails and access to nature trails leading into the surrounding mountains. The community's information office is at 1700 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, Suite 100. To visit, take Interstate 215 to Valle Verde Drive, turn south, and go to Horizon Ridge Parkway. The sales office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
