Coloradans select Siena

Siena, an age-qualified community in southern Summerlin, recently released 21 lots for sale, many of which are located along the guard-gated community's championship golf course or facing the Spring Mountain range. Coloradans Carole and Jim LaBounty were the first to buy one of these lots for their future Nevada home.

The LaBountys, who met and married while attending University of Nevada, Las Vegas, eventually moved to the Denver area, where Jim LaBounty worked as a research biologist for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. After he left the federal agency, he began visiting his hometown of Las Vegas on a regular basis as a consultant for the Southern Nevada Water Authority.

"Frankly, I thought I wanted us to live in the southeast (valley)," he said. "But when she came out from Colorado, we looked at Siena first and neither of us wanted to look any further."

Carole LaBounty, a deputy sheriff for Jefferson County, Colo., plans someday to divide their time between homes in Siena and Lakewood, Colo.

"I can't think of a better life than spending winters in Las Vegas and summers in Colorado," she said. "Both of our homes are southwest of a major metropolitan area. Now if we could figure out a way to convince our two kids to also move to Southern Nevada."

One-third of the community's 1,900 homes will be located along the community's 18-hole golf course. Priced from the mid-$150,000s to more than $400,000, the single-story homes range from 1,200 to more than 3,100 square feet.

Ed Smith, vice president of sales, anticipates that the community's 350th home will be sold this month.

"This is the most diverse offering we have ever had on our golf course," Smith said. "People who have been keeping their eye on Siena's development tell us they are very excited these lots are available now."

The LaBounty home will be just a few steps from the daily-fee course, which is open to the public. Homeowners are given preferred rates and tee times. Individual and corporate memberships are available.

Other community amenities include an 11,800-square-foot golf club, which includes a golf shop and the Siena Grille; and a 40,000-square-foot community center, which features arts and crafts facilities, meeting rooms, a library, ballroom, theater, card rooms, billiards room, and a computer and business center.

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center will staff a wellness center in the community's 15,900-square-foot health and fitness center, slated to open next month. It will have a cardiovascular and weight room, saunas, steam rooms, and an indoor pool.

Other facilities include lighted tennis courts, bocce ball courts, and swimming pools.

Bordered on the north by Flamingo Road, on the east by Hualapai Way, on the west by Town Center Drive, and on the south near Russell Road, the community has pushed the Summerlin boundary to its southwestern edge.

To visit, take Sahara Avenue to Town Center Drive and turn south. Proceed past Desert Inn Road and follow the signs. Models are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
