Hughes Corp. supports soldiers

Las Vegas is the first city in Nevada to join the America Supporting Americans "Adopt-A-Unit" program. It adopted the B Company, 426th Forward Support Battalion, 101st Airborne division (air assault) stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky.

The Howard Hughes Corp. supported the program by providing airfare for four soldiers from the division to fly to Las Vegas to receive the proclamation of adoption from the city council.

The unit includes between 80 and 100 soldiers who listed Las Vegas as their first city of choice for adoption. Three days after their request, the Las Vegas City Council responded affirmatively.

This program, started by the nonprofit ASA organization, links military units with American communities that want to offer support.

Capt. Kevin Groth of Minnesota; 1st Sgt. Jerry Tucker of Mississippi; Spc. Norberto Villa of Arizona; Spc. Vincent Padilla of Colorado; along with Linda Patterson, executive director of America Supporting Americans, received the proclamation.

Representatives of Hughes Corp. treated the group to a tour of the Summerlin master-planned community and nearby Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

"By supporting the military units around the world, we enjoy a greater sense of community and increased pride in America," said Daniel Van Epp, president of Hughes Corp. "We commend the ASA organization for its work in uniting civilians with our country's military in the defense of freedom, and we were happy to show the soldiers of the B Company the other side of Las Vegas."

"Las Vegas, known throughout the world as a place for fun and excitement on its famous Strip, has already brightened the morale of its newly adopted unit," Patterson said. "The Howard Hughes Corp. was especially gracious in making the trip to Las Vegas possible for the soldiers of B Company. It was an experience they will not soon forget."

Hughes Corp. is the developer of Summerlin. Situated along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, it is being developed in villages, each with its own park or golf course.

The community is home to eight golf courses, more than 100 parks, nearly 105 miles of trails, 17 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 100 model homes.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the high $300,000s to nearly $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $1.5 million.

Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s.

To visit the home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue and head east to Town Center.
