Summerlin Children's Forum awards grants

The Summerlin Children's Forum, a nonprofit agency that enhances educational, cultural and recreational activities for Summerlin children, has awarded 30 grants totaling more than $62,000 this year.

"Numerous schools and organizations have benefited from the Summerlin Children's Forum this year," executive director Randy Ecklund said.

Recipients include Richard Bryan Elementary School, which received a $5,000 grant to fund a portable writing lab that helps develop reading, writing and typing skills.

A $1,689 grant to William R. Lummis Elementary School was used to refurbish the school's 10-year-old desert tortoise habitat.

The Salle du Masque Noir, or Black Mask Fencing Club, received a $1,122 grant to purchase materials such as scoring machines and safety equipment.

A $5,401 grant was given to the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services for its Teaching Elderly Computer How-to's for Individual Enjoyment program.

In addition to supporting education, the forum's grant program is open to nonprofit organizations within the community. The forum also provides annual college scholarships to high school seniors.

The forum was established in 1997 by community leaders and The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. All 16 schools in Summerlin may participate.
