KB's chili cook-off mixes many activities

Restaurants, new homes, local firefighters and a local NASCAR driver are among the attractions at KB Home's second annual Chili Taste Off, planned for Sunday at the builder's San Destin neighborhood in the Aliante master-planned community.

The event is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m.

Home shoppers can sample chili from local restaurants, vote for their favorite chili, and pick up free tickets to next Saturday's Orleans Fall Classic at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

KB Home NASCAR driver and former San Francisco 49ers kicker Mike Cofer will give visitors an up-close look at his race car and sign autograph cards.

In addition, firefighters representing the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation will serve as judges and award a prize to the restaurant with the best chili. Visitors can vote for their favorite chili for the "people's choice" award.

The Burn Foundation will raise funds at the event, according to Nate Pechacek, foundation president.

"This great event will allow Las Vegas Valley residents to meet firefighters in person and see first-hand how they help the community," Pechacek said.

The foundation, guided by the valley's firefighters, distributes its proceeds throughout the community to assist residents after catastrophic events.

Other attractions include a radio remote and drawings for restaurant gift certificates.

The neighborhood offers 14 one- and two-story floor plans, ranging from 1,231 to 3,803 square feet.

Homes prices start in the high $200,000s.

To visit, take U.S. Highway 95 to the Interstate 215 east exit. Proceed to the Aliante Parkway exit then go south.

Models are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The builder offers one-stop shopping at its design center, where buyers may select options and upgrades for their homes and prospective buyers can receive free financial advice, including credit reports. It is located at 7440 S. Industrial Road, Suite 201, just south of Warm Springs Road.
