First buyers logged in at Steeplechase

Gaillard Peck Jr. and his wife, Peggy, were the first buyers at Steeplechase by U.S. Home. They chose the northwestern valley neighborhood as a place to spend their retirement years.

The couple chose the 3,000-square-foot Brentwood plan, a single-story design offering four bedrooms, two baths and a three-car garage. Their home will be ready in January.

The Pecks expanded the basic design to increase the square footage in the owner bedroom and the family room. They also converted the third and fourth bedrooms into an office/work area for Gaillard Peck, a retired Air Force pilot and weapons school instructor at Nellis Air Force Base.

"The main living areas of the Brentwood are like a family bonding space," Peggy Peck said. "The family room, kitchen, formal living room and dining room are so open it lets everyone interact and communicate. And I really liked the flexibility of the floor plan."

The couple chose additional insulation, heat-resistant windows, a double-door entry, a spa in the owner bath, ceramic-tile flooring, and upgraded the kitchen appliances and cabinets as well as the carpeting and floor tile.

"We've lived in the same home I originally purchased 30 years ago," Gaillard Peck said. "So, we decided to add every extra we wanted in our new home."

For the exterior, the Pecks opted for "wrap" eaves as opposed to open eaves, rock trim and a wheelchair ramp for Gaillard Peck's father.

Gaillard Peck also has plans for the rear yard.

"Our vision is a pool that is like a desert oasis and a pretty comprehensive cactus garden ... We're bringing along our beautiful Mexican bird of paradise, a Chilean mesquite tree, a large cactus and quite a bit more," he said.

The neighborhood, which comprises 80 home sites, features 12 floor plans, eight of which are single-story designs ranging from 2,550 to 4,000 square feet. Two- and three-story homes measure from 3,000 to 4,500 square feet. Prices start from the mid-$200,000s.

Standard features include granite counter tops, oak cabinetry and cultured-marble vanities.

To visit, take U.S. Highway 95 to Ann Road and exit east. Proceed to Jones Boulevard, then go north to Farm Road. Turn west at Farm, drive to Rainbow Boulevard and go north. The sales office is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except Monday, when it opens at 11 a.m.
