Summerlin's on-site batch plant proves effective
Less than a year ago, The Howard Hughes Corp. contracted with Regency Ready Mix to open a batch plant to service Summerlin. The on-site plant uses soil that has been removed from the area during excavation, then treats it with recycled water to create the building blocks for concrete and other infrastructure elements for development. "Hughes' infrastructure costs have been significantly reduced as a result of having a batch plant on-site, turning our own dirt into a valuable resource," Ken Dufresne, director of construction for Hughes Corp., said. "In addition, the plant is an environmental plus for the community. By reducing the number of trucks and the distances of their commutes, air and dust pollution are significantly decreased." Charles Hepner, owner of Regency Ready Mix, said Summerlin is the first master-planned community in Southern Nevada to open a batch plant on-site. "We strive to work hand-in-hand with The Howard Hughes Corporation to create a seamless process, providing concrete and concrete byproducts for infrastructure development," Hepner said. The portable plant, located on the northwest corner of Charleston Boulevard and Interstate 215, was designed specifically for the master-planned community, according to Tracey Hepner, co-owner of Regency Ready Mix. "The equipment is specific to service Summerlin's needs, and the plant is designed to blend with the surrounding community," she said. Developed by Hughes Corp., Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community 10 of the past 11 years, according to independent surveys. It aligns the western edge of the valley and is comprised of villages. The community features eight golf courses, including two Tournament Players Club facilities and Bear's Best Las Vegas. In addition, there are 107 parks, 107 miles of trails, 16 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 120 model homes. Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the low $200,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s. For more information, visit reviewjournal.com/realestate and click on the Summerlin link.
