Musician finds harmony at Sun City Aliante
Professional musician Floyd Haller and his wife, Judith, were among the first to purchase a new home at Del Webb's Sun City Aliante community, the age-qualified component of the Aliante master-planned community in North Las Vegas. "We bought the Sage model the first day home sites were offered. I've always wanted to live on a golf course and this was a golden opportunity," Floyd Haller said. A resident of Las Vegas for the past 35 years, Haller plays woodwind instruments -- flute, saxophone and clarinet -- for shows and at concerts. "I'm currently working on the Don Rickles show at the Stardust. I've played with Les Brown and Harry James. Used to be you could pay $1 to hear Harry James in casino lounges," he said. For six years Haller traveled with Bob Hope during his annual USO shows to entertain military personnel overseas during the holidays. "We went to Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Greece, Italy, even to a SAC base at the North Pole," he said. Haller's start as a musician was a fluke. When he was 8 years old, a traveling salesman came to his home in Detroit. "They used to sell musical instruments door-to-door like vacuum cleaners. My folks bought a sax and that got me started," he said. When his family moved to Phoenix in 1946, Haller became interested in the high school band. "I went on the road after high school and have been playing ever since," he said. Judith Haller, a teacher's aide at Claude and Stella Parson Elementary School in Las Vegas, wanted a single-story home near the school, and the Sage model fit the bill. Part of the Wildflower collection, the design features three bedrooms, two baths and a covered patio; it measures 1,239 square feet. Seven designs ranging from 1,155 to 2,105 square feet are available. Prices start from the mid-$140,000s to mid-$230,000s. The community will be built around an 18-hole, 6,900-yard, par-72 municipal golf course. "Our new home is off the fifth tee. It's a dream come true for me. Golfing is like music, a never-ending lifetime challenge," Floyd Haller, an avid golfer, said. Other amenities are expected to include a recreation center with club and hobby rooms along with tennis courts, bocce courts, a swimming pool and fitness center. Aliante is bordered roughly by Grand Teton Drive to the north, Centennial Parkway to the south, Decatur Boulevard to the west and Clayton Street to the east. A temporary sales office is set up at 7891 Tropical Parkway, Suite 120, in the Centennial Marketplace at U.S. Highway 95 and Centennial Parkway. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
