Center hub of activity at Anthem
Anthem Center, the recreational facility built by Del Webb for residents of Sun City Anthem, an age-qualified community in Henderson, is rarely empty and often has a full house or two on Thursday nights, according to Hirschel Katz, interim president of the Sun City Anthem Poker Club. "These are friendly games," said Katz, a retired chemical engineer from Iowa. "We socialize, meet people and enjoy the game." Members play several variations of the game, including high-low split and seven-card stud. Its 45 members are all residents of the community. The club averages six tables of players each week, and members will elect officers next month. "We plan to hold poker tournaments, and offer beginner sessions after the first of the year," he said. Katz and his wife, Sandy, moved to the community for the lifestyle it offered. "Whatever interest you have, you can probably find a club for it," Sandy Katz said. She is a member of the women's club, does crafts and plays mah jongg, push and pan. "A friend told us about Sun City Anthem, so we came out to check it out. We liked what we saw so much we bought right away," she said. They purchased the 1,675-square-foot Patriot design that features two bedrooms, a den, two baths, utility area, covered patio, two-car garage and golf cart storage. Located in the foothills near Black Mountain, the community also is home to two golf courses. In addition to serving as site for many club meetings and social activities, the recreation center has a fitness center with exercise equipment, swimming pools and walking tracks, and Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. Nineteen models ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet are available. They are priced from the high $140,000s to more than $500,000. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. The sales center and models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
