Sun City Anthem honors vets

About 400 residents, including 200 military veterans, of Del Webb's age-qualified Sun City Anthem community gathered recently for a Veterans Day observance.

The event included a display of photographs featuring veterans who reside in the Henderson community; keynote speaker Ray Tuggle, a technical sergeant from Nellis Air Force Base; and a performance by the Basic High School ROTC drill team.

"We have so many proud veterans that reside within Sun City Anthem," activities director Brooke Garner said.

Among the veterans who call the community home is Guadalupe M. Olvera, a former staff sergeant. He served in the Army for 8 1/2 years and participated in the invasions of North Africa, Salerno, Naples and Anzio during World War II. He and his wife, Carmela, moved to the community after living in California for 22 years.

The event was held at Anthem Center, which provides social, recreational, fitness and educational facilities. It also houses Trumpets, a restaurant that is open to the public.

Recreational amenities also include The Revere at Anthem Golf Club, which has two championship golf courses.

Twelve single-story designs range from 1,496 to 3,175 square feet. Prices start from the high $200,000s to the high $400,000s.

All homes within the community merit the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star label.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
