Holiday fund-raiser: Pardee renews holiday pledge to Shade Tree

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

Pardee Homes of Nevada has pledged $500 to The Shade Tree Shelter for each new home sold at the builder's Dakota neighborhood between Thanksgiving day and New Year's Day.

"The Shade Tree Shelter has been a safe haven for women and children in crisis for many years. We picked one of the most popular neighborhoods in Pardee's 52-year history in Southern Nevada to help guarantee a generous contribution," sales executive Ray Landry said.

Over 10 years, Pardee's holiday pledges has raised thousands of dollars for the facility.

"There is no better way to celebrate the season of giving," Landry said.

Dakota is located within the Shadow Mountain Ranch community in the southwestern valley. To visit, take Tropicana Avenue west, past Durango Drive, to Grand Canyon Drive and turn left.

Also, visitors are encouraged to drop off children's toys and other items for residents of the shelter at Dakota or any other Pardee sales office.

Needs include toilet tissue, paper towels, new white socks in adult sizes, ladies underwear (sizes 7-10), copy paper (8 1/2 x 11), multipurpose liquid cleaner, spray deodorant, combs and size 5 diapers, according to Brenda Dizon, executive director of the shelter. Also requested are Citizens Area Transit bus tokens, postage stamps, wash cloths, towels, cleaning supplies and Pedialyte.

"During the holidays, we are fortunate that so many remember The Shade Tree," Dizon said. "But companies like Pardee, who support us all year long, help us keep our doors open and continue in our mission of assisting women and children in crisis and transition."

As Clark County's only 24-hour accessible emergency shelter, The Shade Tree has assisted thousands of homeless women and women with children in crisis for 14 years. In addition to safe sleeping, services include laundry and bathing facilities, crisis intervention, job skills development, meals and nutritional counseling, mental health referral, access to medical care, immunizations, and after-school and weekend activities for the children.

In the past year, the shelter at 1 W. Owens Ave. in downtown Las Vegas provided 79,714 nights of shelter to 4,119 abused and homeless women and children, and served another 14,664 individuals through day shelter, according to Dizon. In addition, she said, the facility served 48,806 breakfasts and 37,775 lunches, and provided a personal safety plan for 849 victims of domestic violence, street crime and elder abuse.

"With the continued assistance from corporate donors like Pardee Homes, as well as countless donations from Southern Nevada residents, The Shade Tree has been able to help a growing number of those in desperate need of our help," Dizon said.

All of the builder's sales offices are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Monday, when they open at 11 a.m.
