Golf course leads family to Vintage Valley

Jimmy Pettyjohn isn't the average recreational golfer. Although he admits he's not the game's greatest player, golf plays a significant role in his life.

In addition to frequent tee times, Pettyjohn serves on the board of the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association and is also a member of the board of directors for The Las Vegas Founders' Club, the organization which backs the Invensys PGA tournament every year to raise money for local charities. Thus, when Pettyjohn and his wife, Gina, were looking for a place to build a new home, they were drawn to Vintage Valley, a guard-gated community nestled in The Estates at Southern Highlands Golf Club in the southwestern valley.

"One reason we chose Vintage Valley was the golf course, which is absolutely fantastic," said Pettyjohn, whose family is a member of Southern Highlands Golf Club. "It's in immaculate condition year round and the staff is phenomenal."

The neighborhood features 71 custom-home sites measuring about one-half acre, many with golf course or park frontage. The lots are priced from the $200,000s to $800,000.

The Pettyjohn family, which includes four children ranging in age from 5 to 15, purchased a 25,000-square-foot home site and have started the design process.

"We have been extremely impressed with the whole Southern Highlands' environment and experience. The community has a real family appeal to it," Jimmy Pettyjohn said. "We liked the attention to detail that we saw throughout the grounds and the common areas. They do things `Bentley-style' -- it's not a Cadillac, it's a Rolls Royce."

In addition to the golf club and the future fitness facility, residents of The Estates also have access to jogging and biking trails, hiking in the nearby mountains, and concierge services. The planned Village Center will include shopping and dining venues.

To visit, take Interstate 15 south to Lake Mead Drive and exit west. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
