Sun City Anthem residents revved about classic autos
Residents of Del Webb's Sun City Anthem form clubs around numerous interests, the latest being one for car enthusiasts. "Our purpose is to connect people who have an interest in cars, including customs, classics, or street rods, to get together to share information and socialize," organizer John Bergler said. Most of those who attended the organizational meeting like automobiles of the 1950s and '60s. Byron Swigart, for example, owns a red 1967 Mustang convertible. Dick Hunker has worked all over the world for Ford Motor Co. and prefers the old "muscle" cars, such as the old Chevelles. Jim Murray also prefers cars from the `50s because, he said, "they have a classy look." Roger Gobel owned a 1954 Oldsmobile. "One of the things I especially like about the home we bought at Sun City Anthem is its oversized garage," Gobel said. "My wife, Madeline, and I were planning to travel for a couple of years in an RV after I retired. We were traveling across country and ran into bad weather in Reno, so we decided to head south. While in Las Vegas we checked out the model village at Sun City Anthem just for fun. When Madeline walked into the Concord model it was love at first sight. We decided to settle down." The community features the Anthem Center, which measures 75,000 square feet and houses fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. The swimming pools and fitness center appeal to Hunker's wife, Jennifer, who uses them regularly. "We purchased the Arlington model, largely on the Del Webb reputation," Jennifer Hunker said. "We like the master suite being separate from the guest rooms." The couple moved from Michigan and had never previously thought about living in Southern Nevada. "We looked at the models while visiting, and bought the next day. You get a lot for your money here," she said. Sun City Anthem offers 17 models, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet. More options are available through Gold Key. Homes are priced from the high $130,000s to more than $500,000. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway. The model homes are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
