Prep school reveals plans for Southern Highlands

A new private school is planned to open by fall 2003 within the Southern Highlands community in the southwestern valley. The Southern Highlands Preparatory School, a nonsectarian institution, will teach preschool through fifth grade with plans to expand to other grades at a later date.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for February 2003, when the first phase will start.

"The initial phase will include a 10,000-square-foot building featuring spacious classrooms, a library and media center, a lunchroom, administrative offices, and extensive playground spaces with age-appropriate equipment," said Annette Alcott, who will serve as principal.

Plans for the second phase include a 30,000-square-foot building to accommodate pupils through eighth grade, as well as a gymnasium.

The third phase includes a high school campus with a football and soccer field, tennis courts, a track and baseball diamond.

"Our goal is to enroll students who will benefit from the programs offered at Southern Highlands Preparatory School," Alcott said. "Our extended day and summer and after-school programs such as tae kwon do, dance and academic clubs will also contribute to the intellectual and emotional growth of our students."

The school will be part of the accredited Learning Unlimited International Schools and focus on individualized education, multicultural orientation, critical and creative thinking skills, thematic studies in an integrated program, and technology. In addition to a college preparatory program, the curriculum will include visual and performing arts, foreign languages and athletics.

"We are delighted to offer the residents at Southern Highlands this new prestigious educational resource," said Garry Goett, president of Southern Highlands Development Corp. "By bringing in an accredited institution ..., we not only ensure quality education, but enhance the overall vision for creating a high quality lifestyle at Southern Highlands."

Behind the guarded gates of the Southern Highlands Golf Club is the Estates, a neighborhood of custom lots situated among the rolling terrain of the golf course to offer city and mountain views. These lots measure from one-half acre to 2 acres and are priced from $300,000 to more than $1 million.

In addition to a 42,000-square-foot clubhouse, residents enjoy membership in The Spa at Southern Highlands. Soon to be under construction, the 13,000-square-foot center will offer a training area, steam rooms, massage and treatment rooms, tennis courts and pools.

To visit, take Interstate 15 to the Henderson/Lake Mead exit, head west and follow the signs.
