AAPEX debuts 'Smart Garage'

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

The garage of the future will make its Las Vegas debut at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo, which runs Tuesday through Friday at the Sands Expo Center.

Presented by Dodge and Gladiator Garage Works, the "Smart Garage" represents a growing trend among Americans to customize their favorite area in the house, according to Gregg Hano of Popular Science magazine, which built the 950-square-foot structure.

"So much innovation and invention happens in the garage from building a basic bookcase or rebuilding an engine to two guys named Bill and Dave creating the HP200A, the first product that began Hewlett Packard," Hano said.

The garage is built of steel and glass with bays of adjustable skylights. Included is a workshop with the latest tools and equipment; a bar with a "freezerator," wet bar and snack area; a computer center with Internet access, printer, phone and intercom system; an entertainment system with features ranging from a flat-screen TV to the latest sound systems; and a storage area for lawn and garden supplies, tools, sports equipment and other items.

AAPEX is the automotive aftermarket industry's largest trade show.
