Harrison Door chief touts insulation

Insulation in a garage door is a good way for homeowners to save energy, according to Harrison Door Co. President Don Harrison.

Much like walls and attics, he said the insulation reduces the effects of outdoor temperatures, reduces noise inside the garage and increases the door's durability by making it more stable.

The company manufactures a two-ply, 1 5/8-inch thick insulation designed specifically for garage doors. It features a foam interior and laminate exterior, and is custom-made to fit each door.

Homeowners can add insulation to existing doors or have a new door with insulation installed. Either way, Harrison recommends hiring a professional, primarily for safety reasons.

If not applied properly, he said, the insulation's extra weight can cause the door to malfunction or to slip down.

"Some do-it-yourselfers attempt to apply the insulation on their own, but on many occasions we are called in to repair their failed attempts," Harrison said.

It takes about one hour to add insulation to an existing door and three hours to install a new door.

There is an additional charge for garage doors with windows.

A one-year parts and labor warranty is included with each purchase.

Harrison Door Co. is located at 1951 Ramrod Ave. in Henderson. The firm has manufactured and installed doors since 1977.
