Retirees choose Sun City

Retirement at Sun City Anthem in Henderson keeps Paul and Isabel DeLorey busy.

Paul DeLorey, a former fire chief for the Tahoe-Douglas Fire Protection District, was a resident of Lake Tahoe most of his life, and his wife lived there for 25 years. When they decided to retire, they moved to Reno, but found the lifestyle in Southern Nevada more to their liking because "we don't have to shovel snow here," he said.

In addition to enjoying the age-qualified community's fitness center, volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children takes up Paul DeLorey's time.

"I represent a child's interests in cases as determined by a judge," he said, explaining that CASA helps resolve cases for children, usually in situations involving troubled families. "It's rewarding work."

His wife also stays busy by enjoying many of the community's clubs and activities.

"I do a lot here, like playing tennis, tai chi, yoga, swimming, hiking, running, billiards," Isabel DeLorey said. "I'm doing something all the time. I'd like to join more of the clubs offered here at Sun City Anthem, but I just can't fit it all in."

Many of the activities are held at Anthem Center. The 77,363-square-foot facility offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities to residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

They are enjoying the Del Webb lifestyle in part because of their daughter.

"Our daughter, Candace, is a third-grade teacher in Henderson. She recommended Sun City Anthem as an ideal retirement community, and we've loved it here," Paul DeLorey said.

The couple purchased a Patriot model because it offers a casita for out-of-town visitors. The home is part of the Premier series and includes a dual master suite, den, great room, and two-car garage with a golf cart area.

"We also wanted to downsize from our previous home. This is a comfortable size that isn't too big, but we can still entertain company," he said.

Nineteen models are offered, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet. Prices start from the low $140,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, and turn left on Anthem Parkway. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
