Benefit golf tourney tees off in June

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

The LandWell Company Cure Asthma Golf Classic will be held Monday, June 3 at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson. The annual tournament and silent auction is a benefit for National Jewish Medical and Research Center, a Denver-based facility devoted to research, patient care, and education for chronic lung, allergic and immune system diseases.

"National Jewish has been named the best hospital in America for treating respiratory diseases by U.S. News & World Report for the past four years in a row," Steve Rice, tournament vice chairman, said. "For more than 100 years, it has been the leader in researching diseases and treating hundreds of thousands of patients, regardless of age, religion, race or ability to pay."

Last year's event raised more than $114,000, and since its inception in 1992, the annual tournament has raised more than $500,000.

The LandWell Company is the naming sponsor of the tournament, which is also underwritten by the Rio Secco Golf Club and Harrah's. Other corporate underwriters include CB Richard Ellis, Cox Communications, The Howard Hughes Corp., Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth F. Sokol, Jones Vargas, American Nevada Corp., Harsch Investment Properties, Marnell Corrao, Nevada State Bank and LM Construction.

"The Southern Nevada real estate community is very supportive of this tournament," said Lynn M. Taussig, a physician and president and CEO of National Jewish. "Their commitment helps us to continue our own commitment to care and discovery, leading to better health for our patients in Nevada and around the world."

Entry packages start at $500 per golfer and include green fees, a golf cart, beverages, lunch and dinner. Registration opens at 11 a.m. followed by a buffet lunch. The tournament uses a four-player scramble format and begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for straightest drive and closest to the pin, and luxury cars will be awarded for hole-in-one shots on select holes. The day concludes with a reception, live and silent auctions, a barbecue dinner and an awards ceremony.

"Our collection of unique and exciting silent and live auction prizes, along with the ever-challenging Rio Secco golf course, should make this year's tournament another record breaker," Brad Schnepf, tournament vice chairman, said. "Tournament participants will be bidding on a variety of prizes ... including a trip to Edmonton, (Alberta), to visit the world's largest shopping mall. This $2,500 prize package, donated by Triple Five Nevada, includes airfare, hotel accommodations and a gourmet dinner for two."

Other prizes include the use of the Cox Communications' and The Howard Hughes Corp.'s suites at the Thomas & Mack Center during the National Finals Rodeo, a Super Bowl package, and a diamond bracelet from Michael E. Minden & Co.

The tournament is one of a dozen held nationwide each year to benefit National Jewish.
