Recent retirees take it easy at Siena

Sandy and Paul Hurst loved raising their nine children and having demanding careers. Now the retired couple love the relaxing lifestyle at Siena, an age-qualified village in Summerlin.

"We couldn't be more content," Sandy Hurst said. "This is how life should be. There's a younger active adult group here and we have loads of fun. Because Siena is smaller, it feels more like a family than a community. It's easy to get to know people and participate to the hilt."

The Hursts take ballroom dancing and computer classes at the social center, belong to the bocce club, and participate in many community events created by activities director Kristyne Blake. They also use the fitness center almost daily.

"As a former nurse, I know the importance of an active lifestyle. I take yoga, and Paul, who hurt his back doing his work as an electrician, uses the pools for exercise," Hurst said.

The 15,900-square-foot fitness center has a 25-meter indoor pool and a spa. The swim pavilion's two-story arched windows overlook an 18-hole golf course, outdoor pool and tennis courts. Other amenities include cardiovascular and weight rooms, private saunas, and steam rooms.

Fitness center director Wayne Ireland, an exercise physiologist, has created a schedule of classes ranging from water aerobics to tai chi.

Sandy Hurst volunteers at the Summerlin Hospital Medical Center's on-site wellness center.

The Hursts loved the community's setting in the foothills of the Spring Mountains.

The community's 24-hour guard-gated entry and roving security officers are also features they appreciate.

"The security officers know our names, they know our houses, and they're watching out for us. One night when the wind blew our front door open, the security guard stopped to let us know," Hurst said.

The golf course includes a golf shop and the Siena Grille, a restaurant with patio dining overlooking a waterfall.

One-third of the homes at the community will be built along the golf course. All of the 14 floor plans are single-story and detached, ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 square feet.

Prices start from the mid-$160,000s to about $650,000 .

To visit, take Sahara Avenue or Interstate 215 to Town Center Drive and go south to Siena Monte Avenue. Models are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
