Howard Hughes Corp. reception hits the books
The Howard Hughes Corp. recently hosted a reception for "Clark County Reads," a campaign aimed at collecting money and books for Clark County public schools, as well as training and recruiting 1,000 literacy volunteers. The purpose of the reception, held in the TPC at The Canyons clubhouse in Summerlin, was to heighten awareness of the new initiative and to introduce the program's founders to potential donors. "Reading begins with books that interest children. Unfortunately, there just aren't as many up-to-date and well-conditioned books in Clark County public schools as there should be," said Dan Van Epp, president of Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. "We were pleased to be a part of this initiative by hosting the kickoff and donating the first books." Clark County Reads aims at collecting or buying 400,000 books for pupils in kindergarten through third grade by the end of the year. Within the next two years, program organizers hope to add 1.5 million books to school libraries and K-12 classrooms throughout the county. Built along the western valley, Summerlin features several golf courses, parks, trails, 16 schools, business parks and nearly 150 model homes. Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from under $100,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the $700s. To visit the community's home finding center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
