Custom-home builder chooses Southern Highlands

Leroy Loerwald, a 12-year home builder and lifelong Las Vegas resident, chose an estate lot at The Estates at Southern Highlands Golf Club in the southwestern valley as the site for his newest project.

"Quite frankly, I think that The Estates at Southern Highlands Golf Club is the nicest custom-home area in Las Vegas," Loerwald said. "... I won't rule out that I will build my own personal house out here."

Loerwald's company, Loerwald Construction, is building an 8,400-square-foot, single-story, Tuscan-style home, the first one to be built in the Olympia Hills neighborhood.

Loerwald designed the five-bedroom, six-bath house, which will showcase 12-foot ceilings, a library with mahogany paneling, tumbled marble flooring, five cabinet colors and a four-car garage.

The back yard will contain a patio, as well as a stack stone rock pool with a waterfall that travels down a creek and ends at the whirlpool spa. The front of the house will have a creek that goes through the driveway.

"The patio is quite large, with a television, outdoor fireplace, large barbecue and refrigerator, and a detached casita that acts as a pool house/cabana with slate floors," Loerwald said.

Southern Highlands Golf Club features a 7,381-yard, par-72 course. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course features elevation changes and rolling terrain with views of the course and surrounding landscape. Eighteen acres of streams, lakes and waterfalls accent the property, and it is one of the host courses for the PGA Tour's Invensys Classic.

The club's 42,000-square-foot clubhouse, fashioned after a Tuscan manor, features a golfer's library, a wine room, locker rooms, a range of dining options and a golf shop. In addition, five 1,400-square-foot golf cottages are available as vacation residences to members and guests.

Residents will also be eligible for private membership to a planned fitness center. The 12,000-square-foot center will offer such amenities as a training area, private steam rooms, massage and treatment rooms, a pool, and tennis courts. Members may also participate in spinning, Pilate's and yoga classes.

To visit, take Interstate 15 to Lake Mead Drive and follow the signs. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
