Summerlin dogs take center stage

Dozens of Summerlin residents participated in the sixth annual Bark in the Park, an event that features competitions for dog-lovers and their pets.

Activities included a canine costume contest, silly pet tricks, pooch smooch, and a dog/owner look-alike contest.

Bark in the Park is a favorite event for those who enjoy showcasing their pets, said Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, director of community relations for The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association which coordinated the event.

"Our residents are responsible and proud pet owners. Most of the dogs come to the event freshly groomed and ready to show off. It is a fun event for both our community's dog-lovers and their four-legged friends," she said.

The dog-friendly community has several amenities designed to accommodate pets, including its more than 100 miles of trails and parks which feature dog waste receptacles. In addition, the council coordinates canine obedience classes.

"We realize that for many families, the dog is an extension of the family unit," Barnson-DeNardin said. "We want them to feel at home in Summerlin as well."

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin ranked as the country's best-selling master-planned community for much of the last decade.

Located in the western valley, it is comprised of villages and features 107 parks, schools, houses of worship, shopping and business centers, medical facilities and cultural facilities.

Nearly 120 models showcase the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Homes are priced from the high $200,000s to more than $800,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges village are priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s.
