Sun City Anthem offers myriad fitness opportunities

Before the baby boomers, one may have thought of knitting classes or bridge clubs when considering an age-restricted community. Those impressions are irrelevant at Del Webb's Sun City Anthem.

Residents of the age-qualified community in Henderson can participate in a variety of clubs, such as tennis, hiking and computers, and its fitness center is constantly buzzing, with Pilates becoming one of its most popular fitness classes.

Pilates is a combination of yoga principles to improve muscle control, strengthen and tone. Both help improve posture, strength and flexibility.

"I was looking for something different -- something other than weight training and aerobics to keep me in shape. I read that Pilates improves posture and flexibility and thought I'd give it a try," resident George Gingerelli said. "Actually, the flyer said Pilates might even improve my golf game. That's what motivated me to actually take a class."

Gingerelli, who takes the class twice a week, said one of its greatest benefits is stronger abdominal muscles.

The fitness center, which is located within the community's Anthem Center, offers residents several exercise and instructional classes, social activities, a workout facility, on-site massages, walking track, and indoor/outdoor swimming pools. The facility has hosted such activities as an "Attack Your Allergies" class, anti-aging lectures, pool parties, and triathlons.

Homes are priced from the low $140,000s to more than $500,000 at the community. Nineteen models are offered, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and more through the Gold Key program.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, to Anthem Parkway and turn left. The models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
