Golf fanatic swings into Sun City

The myriad activities available at Del Webb's Sun City Anthem drew retired Royal Canadian Air Force pilot G. Rod Lyons. He plays tennis and softball, swims, bikes, hikes and especially enjoys golf at the age-qualified community in Henderson.

"This community is everything I thought it would be," Lyons said. "It's amazing."

Lyons likes golf so much that he decided to place a putting green with a water feature in his back yard that mirrors the community's Lexington golf course.

The Lexington is one of two golf courses at the Revere at Anthem Golf Club. The 7,143-yard, par-72, 18-hole championship course winds its way through the desert, and the other course: the 7,050-yard Concord. Both were designed by architect Greg Nash and PGA golfer Billy Casper.

"We have also designed some very dramatic elevation changes from the tees to greens, which is a pretty dynamic view when players are hitting off the green," Nash said.

Jim Stegall, general manager of the golf club, said Sun City residents receive preferred access and green fees.

"Sun City Anthem residents can reserve 17 days in advance and have a special resident rate," Stegall said. "The community has very active men's and ladies' clubs, and we provide ongoing events for residents such as Ladies Day and couples' leagues."

A tunnel below Hampton Road provides access from the clubhouse to the practice field, a 13-acre, 330-yard facility that accommodates as many as 50 players. Special rates and tee times also are offered to Clark County residents.

The community is also home to Anthem Center, a 77,363-square-foot facility that offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

Twelve models are featured, ranging from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet and priced from the low $200,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
