Summerlin Sam celebrates fifth birthday
Summerlin Sam, mascot of the Summerlin master-planned community, will celebrate his fifth birthday on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Gardens Park, near Town Center Drive and Desert Inn Road. This year's birthday bash will feature a luau theme. The event is free and open to the public. Hawaiian-themed activities, dance performances, games, entertainment, music, and cake and refreshments are among the festivities. Storybook and children's television characters, and other mascots are scheduled to attend. Contests and drawings for prizes, including a private birthday party hosted by Summerlin Sam, will be held throughout the day. Introduced to the community in spring 1997, Summerlin Sam is the community's goodwill ambassador, appearing at community events, making special visits at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, and making special appearances outside the community. "Sam makes just about everyone smile," said Tom Warden, an executive with The Howard Hughes Corp., the developer of Summerlin. "At 6-plus-feet, he's a rather big guy for a 5-year-old, and his heart is even bigger. That's why we are celebrating his birthday with an out-of-this-world party." A variety of homes in Summerlin are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. There are also custom lots, custom homes and apartments available. To visit, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to the Sahara exit. The sales center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
