Energy Star program touts savings
With energy prices rapidly increasing, an Energy Star-labeled home is one of the best investments a family can make, according to Sam Rashkin, national director of the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star for Homes program. "Lower energy costs are built into every Energy Star-labeled home," Rashkin said. "Compared with the national Model Energy Code, today's Energy Star homes are at least 30 percent more energy efficient. So you can expect to save hundreds of dollars on utility bills annually." May is Nevada Energy Star Month, sponsored by Energy Star Partners, a coalition of local developers, energy inspection/certification companies, mortgage lenders and other nonbuilder partners who have launched a comprehensive program to inform home buyers of the benefits of owning an Energy Star home. "Energy Star homes perform better, thanks to energy-efficient features like airtight construction and duct work, effective insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment and design, and high-performance windows," Rashkin said. "As a result, owners of Energy Star homes enjoy quieter and healthier living environments with fewer drafts and more consistent temperature levels." Energy Star is a partnership between the EPA and the Department of Energy to promote nationwide energy efficiency. "In locations like Las Vegas, with relatively little cloud cover, house attics can reach temperatures as high as 170 degrees," said Rebecca Oscarson, regional sales manager for ConSol, a company the certifies homes' energy efficiency. "In an Energy Star home, all floors are more evenly cooled and heated throughout the year, and less energy is used to do it. And using less energy at home saves money while providing tremendous environmental dividends to our community, our nation and the planet." Almost 30 Energy Star product categories are available to consumers, including heating and cooling equipment, appliances, consumer electronics, computers, office equipment, and lighting fixtures. A special Web site, www.NevadaEnergyStarHomes.com, lists all partners and includes a map of participating neighborhoods, as well as a calendar of special events that will occur throughout May.
