Summerlin kicks off inaugural Earthfaire

More than 3,000 valley residents attended the inaugural Summerlin Earthfaire held recently at Summerlin Centre Community Park.

The outdoor festival featured more than 30 environmental organizations, as well as entertainment and special attractions, such as Mad Science, which provided children with an opportunity to conduct hands-on experiments; gardeners from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension; and City of the World, which showed children how to create art from recycled materials.

The Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park showed off reptiles and other desert creatures; the Lied Animal Shelter brought out animals for adoption; and the Southwest Wildlife Foundation displayed several birds, including an eagle.

"Our impressive list of participants made this inaugural event a great success," said Tom Warden, an executive with The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin's developer. "We are fortunate to frequently work with these accomplished environmental organizations that contribute to the overall well-being of our community."

Participants included Friends of Red Rock, the Bureau of Land Management, The Tortoise Group, Desert Research Institute, Red Rock Audubon Society, Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, Outside Las Vegas, Southern Nevada Water Authority, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club and the Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee.

Summerlin, ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for much of the last decade, is situated along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley. The community is home to 107 neighborhood and village parks, more than 100 miles of trails, 17 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 120 models.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are available, and priced from the mid-$200,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites are priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s.
