Tennis proves popular at Red Rock

Tennis is among the numerous recreational opportunities available at Red Rock Country Club, a Sunrise Colony Co. development in Summerlin.

Jeff Foley, tennis director, said he is delighted about the sport's popularity among members.

"Tennis, like golf, is a sport the whole family can play together, and we see it all the time here. It's a national trend and we see its popularity growing at every age level," Foley said.

"Tennis is great for young children's hand-eye coordination. I see real progress in these kids right away. It is my opinion that tennis helps keep older kids healthy, busy and out of trouble. And, of course, it keeps you in great shape at any age. Members in their 80s and older are participating in tournaments."

Foley and tennis pros Crombie Hatfield and Ben Coates provide individual, as well as group lessons for people of all ages.

"We have adult tennis leagues that play almost year-round," Foley said. "Last year we had two teams from Red Rock Country Club make it all the way to the nationals, and hopefully we will be able to repeat some of those same results this year."

The tennis center is comprised of a world-class stadium court where professional tennis exhibitions and amateur tournaments are held, as well as nine lighted hard-surface courts.

"Our courts have played host to a series of events including the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, featuring teams from Stanford, UCLA, Duke and UNLV, and Players for the Cure, an event that raised awareness for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and featured the talents of Mary Pierce, Serena Williams and many others," Foley said.

Red Rock Country Club is planned to include two 18-hole golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer. One course is open and complements a practice facility with a double-ended driving range, putting green and chipping areas.

The clubhouse features a pro shop; elegant and casual restaurants; and men's and women's locker rooms, each with a sauna, steam room, private lounge and media center.

The sports club provides health and fitness equipment, saunas, steam rooms, an aerobics studio, massage therapy rooms, locker rooms and a supervised children's play center.

Several pools are available in the aquatic center, which also features an outdoor grill.

The guard-gated community will contain more than 1,110 homes at buildout. Buyers can choose from single- and two-story floor plans, measuring from 1,902 to 5,300 square feet with as many as six bedrooms and four-car garages.

Homes are priced from the $300,000s to more than $2 million.

Through the builder's Sunsation program, buyers can make structural changes, reconfigure rooms, or add a swimming pool, upgraded landscaping, a patio and lighting designs. A design center is on-site.

To visit, take Sahara Avenue west past Town Center Drive and follow the signs. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara and head west. The sales office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
