Former Californians delighted with Summerlin

When Dave and Marie McKinnon were looking for a new home, they wanted one in a community that they could afford on one income.

"We were living in Silicon Valley at the time and we knew we would never be able to afford a house there," Marie McKinnon said. "We weren't really considering Las Vegas at the time, but we came out to visit friends and fell in love with Summerlin."

The McKinnons moved to the master-planned community in 1999.

Dave McKinnon works as a superintendent for William Lyon Homes, which has built several neighborhoods in Summerlin.

"It is great working close to home. I don't have long commutes and I am close to my family," McKinnon said.

Marie McKinnon organized a children's play group specifically for residents of the community.

"It has made living in Summerlin even more wonderful," she said.

The McKinnons are the parents of 6-year-old Bridget and 3-year-old Molly.

Summerlin aligns the western edge of the valley and is comprised of villages. There are eight golf courses, as well as 105 neighborhood and village parks, more than 100 miles of trails, 18 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities and business parks.

Nearly 150 model homes are open, showcasing single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments feature monthly rents starting from the high $700s.

To visit the home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue, head east to Town Center and turn north. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
