Summerlin Tennis Club recognized
The Summerlin Tennis Club was recognized recently by the Nevada Tennis Association as the Organization of the Year for its success in attracting new players to the game. Since 1999, the club, located in the Summerlin master-planned community, has organized teams for several leagues and association-sanctioned tournaments, as well as tennis-oriented socials for residents. The tennis club is overseen by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association which is dedicated to enriching the community's social, educational, and recreational activities. Gordon Hammond, who serves as second vice president for the United States Professional Tennis Association Intermountain Region, supervises the club's tennis program. Hammond has played tennis for more than 30 years and coached for the past 12 years. "As a junior player, I would travel to Europe to play in tournaments. Summerlin is much different than other locations where I have coached. Here, there is more of a friendly, neighborhood environment that isn't found in some of the other private and more formal clubs. It is a comfortable atmosphere and less threatening for those who want to start playing the sport for the first time," Hammond said. According to Brock Wilson, the council's recreation supervisor, more than 1,000 residents have participated in the various tennis clinics and leagues offered throughout the years. "The classes accommodate all skill levels and age groups," he said. Twelve lighted tennis courts are available throughout the community. Summerlin, developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community 10 of the past 11 years, according to independent surveys. Located in the western valley, it is being developed in villages and is home to eight golf courses, 105 parks, more than 100 miles of trails, 18 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities and business parks. Its nearly 150 model homes showcase the single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums that are available. They are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s. To visit the community's home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue, head east to Town Center and turn north. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
