Contest participants tour Sun City

Seeing science theories applied in the actual field, pupils of Edna Hinman Elementary School learned about home building, golf course development, site grading and facility construction in a Del Webb Corp.-sponsored tour of Sun City Anthem in Henderson.

The tour rewarded participants in the Twelfth Annual Student Model Bridge Building Contest, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The community "adopted" the school through the Clark County School District Partnership Program.

Jon Marzolf, golf course construction superintendent, showed the students land development activities shaping the age-qualified community's second golf course, the Concord. This 7,050-yard course, designed by architect Greg Nash and PGA Hall-of-Famer Billy Casper, follows The Revere golf club.

Craig Fritsinger, project manager, demonstrated how blueprints are utilized in building the clubhouse at The Revere. The 23,000-square-foot clubhouse will feature a golf shop, banquet rooms, golf cart storage, sports bar and restaurant.

Tyson Trueblood, manager of the builder's Gold Key custom-home division, took pupils on a tour of a home in the framing stages of construction.

"Both the building contest and the Sun City Anthem field trip helped demonstrate the importance and practicality of the knowledge the students obtain in the classroom," Fritsinger said. "Our goal was to show the students the value in the science and math theories and concepts they're studying."

After the presentations, the pupils were treated to lunch in the community's 75,000-square-foot Anthem Center.

"The students showed a true desire to see science principles utilized in a field setting. It's rewarding to see such outstanding students with a real eagerness to learn, question and participate," Trueblood said.

The community offers 17 model homes, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and priced from the high $130,000s to more than $500,000. The 1,465-square-foot Quincy and the 1,564-square-foot Andover models recently opened.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway. The models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
