Southern Highlands hosts collegiate golfers

Southern Highlands Golf Club recently hosted some of the finest collegiate players in the 2002 Callaway Golf Las Vegas Men's Intercollegiate Tournament.

Georgia Tech won the tournament with a combined 19 under par, far ahead of second place University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which finished at 1 under par.

The event featured several of the top teams and players in the country including the last four national champion teams; Bubba Dickerson, the current U.S. amateur champion; two Public Links champions, D.J. Trahan and Chez Reavie; 15 All-Americans; and several nationally ranked teams.

Southern Highlands Golf Club is the host course for the UNLV men's team, which won the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in 1998.

"This year's Callaway Golf Intercollegiate was one of most exciting college golf tournaments in the country," golf club manager Jay Davis said. "To host such an event is a real honor, and we really saw some extraordinary golf and I know that all the teams enjoyed the course."

Southern Highlands Golf Club features a 7,381-yard, par-72 course with a risk/reward design. Elevation changes and rolling terrain offer views of the course and surrounding landscape. The course is part of the PGA Tour's Invensys Classic.

The club's 42,000-square-foot clubhouse, fashioned after a Tuscan manor, features a golfer's library, wine room, locker rooms, a range of dining options and a golf shop. Nearby, the club manages five furnished 1,400-square-foot cottages as vacation residences for members and their guests.

The club is part of a 2,300-acre master-planned community. Behind guarded gates is The Estates, a community of custom-home sites along the golf course.

Vintage Valley, a 71-home custom neighborhood in the community, is selling golf frontage and interior cul-de-sac home sites measuring one-half acre. This neighborhood features tree-lined streets and a European-style park with a basketball court and playground.

The custom-home sites are priced from $300,000 to $800,000 and include a golf membership valued at $90,000.

Residents of The Estates may also have access to a fitness center, which is set for construction in the coming months. The 12,000-square-foot center will offer a training area, steam rooms, massage and treatment rooms, a pool, and tennis courts. Members may also participate in Spinning, Pilate's and yoga classes.

Plans for the community also call for more than 40 acres of parks, play areas, and miles of bike and jogging trails. Commercial facilities are also planned.

To visit, take Interstate 15 to the Lake Mead Drive exit, go west and follow the signs. The sales office for The Estates is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
