"Kids to Kids is a remarkable organization. Its dedication to introducing children to the power of the written word is a real inspiration," said John A. Ritter, chairman and chief executive officer of Focus Property Group. "In building a strong community at Providence, we want to help organizations like Kids to Kids while encouraging our residents to be active participants in reading and helping others to read."
About 12,000 young people, all of whom are at-risk students, participated in the program, which encourages donations for each page of a book a child reads.
The event marked the conclusion of the organization's annual Pennies for Pages Read-a-Thon and coincided with the culmination of Nevada Reading Week. It featured games for children that integrated books as the central theme.
The Festival included an appearance by Heaven Can Wait, a no-kill pet adoption center that uses gentle dogs to help children who might be hesitant readers. The organization's program, Tales to Tails, had volunteers reading stories to children with dogs at their side that help put the young people at ease.
Additional event programming included an appearance by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation who had its BookPALS program on hand at the festival where performers brought Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat," and other books to life.
Participants at the celebration enjoyed complimentary food and refreshments while children visited the festival's interactive arts and crafts booths.
Parents had the opportunity to tour model homes, while their children were entertained by storytellers.
Providence is focusing its community outreach efforts in the area of literacy and has formed a partnership with Kids to Kids.
