Golfer plans life upon Mountain Falls course

Lifelong Southern Nevadan and golf lover Fred Walker said he can hardly wait to move from downtown Las Vegas to his new home at Mountain Falls, a master-planned golf course community in the Pahrump Valley.

"We'll be out of the hubbub of the city, but close enough to visit friends and family in Las Vegas whenever we want. Many people don't realize that an extra few minutes on the road will get them to a laid-back community where the homes are nicer and less expensive. From Las Vegas, it's just a 45-minute drive to Shangri La," Walker said of Mountain Falls. "The drive is nothing. It's enjoyable and easy."

Walker and his fiancée, Mary Lou Torbica, are anticipating retired life on the 11th tee box of Mountain Falls Golf Club, an 18-hole course that anchors the community.

"Living on the golf course was one of my prerequisites," said Walker, whose downtown-area 1940s home is surrounded by buildings and concrete. "I've completely lost sight of the horizon. I want a feeling of openness with a view, and we'll have that at Mountain Falls."

Walker and Torbica selected a 2,495-square-foot floor plan in the all single-story community of Bella Sera. Other William Lyon Homes neighborhoods selling in the master plan are Tramonto and Cascata Ancora. Prices start in the low $200,000s. Classic Homes, Celebrate Homes and Desert Wind Homes will debut communities this year.

Already a regular at Mountain Falls Golf Club, Walker said he plans to play several rounds of golf weekly at the parkland course near his new home. Torbica hopes to take golf lessons and enjoy the course alongside her husband.

"The practice facilities are the best in Southern Nevada. My friends say the same thing every time we play Mountain Falls," Walker said.

In addition to the golf course, the couple's home site offers views of Mt. Charleston.

"Mountain Falls is quiet and peaceful. You never hear sirens or horns honking," Walker said. "It's a friendly place. We feel right at home and have already made friends with neighbors, the golf pro and our sales agent."

Mountain Falls features a Mediterranean-themed community resident facility overlooking the golf course. Highlights include a fitness center with treadmills, elliptical machines, Stairmasters and recumbent exercise bikes. Free weights and weight-strength machines and locker rooms also are available. Other amenities include a resident lounge with a pool table and a multi-purpose room, the site of fitness and activity classes. Outside, residents have use of a family pool, adult pool, spa and interactive water-play area.

The Mountain Falls Grill Room, open to golfers, residents and the public, is located in a clubhouse adjacent to the resident facility. A Sunday brunch buffet is now available. Banquet facilities can accommodate up to 300 guests for weddings, tournaments and private parties.

Upon completion, Mountain Falls will include dozens of neighborhood mini parks and a four-mile walking trail. Homeowner association fees are set at less than $50 per month.

To visit from Las Vegas, travel about 45 miles west on Highway 160 (Blue Diamond Road) past Interstate 15. Before reaching Pahrump, turn left on Manse Road. Proceed to Hafen Ranch and turn right, then left on Lakeview. Follow the signs to the Mountain Falls Information Center. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
