Anthem dogs sit in on `Woofstock'
More than 200 dogs and their humans participated in Woofstock, a pet appreciation event held recently for residents of the Anthem master-planned community. Seemingly nearly every breed, color and size of dog, along with a variety of pet care professionals, vendors and trainers, turned out to support the event, which benefited the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "We have a lot of pet lovers at Anthem," said Pam Mitchell, director of athletics for Anthem Country Club. "Woofstock 2003 is a fun event to show off the pet members of the Anthem families." Fly'n Aces club members conducted a demonstration fly ball relay race. In addition to making donations to the NSPCA, the group also had pets available for adoption. One lucky Chihuahua, Tiny, was adopted by Fred Silberkraus. "A dog can bring a richness to life with a dimension that cannot be duplicated by humans," Silberkraus said. "Also, I appreciate that the NSPCA is a no-kill shelter." Most participants attended the event to show off their dogs. One country club resident brought her pooch, Annie, a year-old, 175-pound Old English Mastiff. "She's not fully grown," human companion Ellen Clevens said. "She'll get to about 200. I love taking her places. We're here today because I think it's important to support everything that happens in our great community." The NSPCA rescues strays, and abused and abandoned animals. It plans to place more than 2,000 pets through adoptions this year, according to Peggie Flaim, the organization's special events coordinator. Anthem comprises Sun City Anthem, Anthem Country Club and Coventry Homes. To visit, take East ern Avenue south, past St. Rose Parkway, to Anthem Parkway and follow the signs. Models and sales centers are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Del Webb has four active subdivisions: Sun City Anthem, Solera at Anthem and Anthem Highlands, as well as Sun City Aliante, which is part of the Aliante community in North Las Vegas.
