Coach inspires tourney participants
Several members of the Palo Verde High School varsity basketball team participated in the annual Summerlin Pre-Madness 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Josh Steffen, starting shooting guard, took first place in his age bracket with teammates Nathan Shulte and Amir Ahmad. "Our participation was dedicated to our coach, Phil Clarke, who taught us about more than just basketball," Steffen said. "During this past season, Coach Clark learned his cancer had resurfaced, and he was in a great deal of pain. But despite this affliction and other trials he and his family experienced during our season, he remained committed to the team. His abilities made him our coach, but his character made him our leader." The Summerlin Council, a nonprofit affiliate of the Summerlin Community Association, has hosted the tournament since 2000. Brock Wilson, recreation supervisor for the council, said the event drew more than 100 participants. "The basketball tournament is one of our more popular athletic events. It is a frequently played sport in Summerlin because of the large number of courts located throughout the community," Wilson said. Of the 19 major parks in Summerlin, nine have basketball courts. The council also coordinates activities for sports such as soccer, volleyball, tennis and softball. Summerlin aligns the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley and is comprised of villages. It offers eight golf courses, parks, trails, schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities and business parks. Nearly 120 model homes showcase the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums, which are priced from the low $200,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges village are priced from the high $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s. For more information, visit www.reviewjournal.com/real estate and click on the Summerlin link.
