Summerlin expands Trails village area

A 14-acre parcel at Village Center Circle and Trailwood Drive in Summerlin's The Trails village has begun to take shape with retail and commercial development. The parcel is located in a developed area of the community adjacent to the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, the Trails Village shopping center, and a post office.

Construction is under way on a 46,000-square-foot fitness center; a full-service gas station, convenience store and car wash; and a retail center that will include two fast food restaurants.

Stew Gibbons, an executive with The Howard Hughes Corp. who oversees Summerlin development, said this commercial area was intended as a major gathering place with retail, service, office and cultural space.

"This new development is a great addition to the existing facilities located in the village centers of The Trails and The Hills," Gibbons said. "Fabulous Freddy's is Summerlin's third gas station; there's a lot of excitement and enthusiasm among residents for the 24 Hour Fitness Super-Sport; and new restaurants and stores are always a welcome addition to the community."

The fitness center is planned for completion by late 2002 or early 2003 and will feature basketball, racquetball and squash courts; an expanded exercise/weight room; a cycling room; swimming pool, spa, steam room and sauna; children's area; and a juice bar. It will be the first of its kind for 24 Hour Fitness in Southern Nevada.

Caliber Retail Properties Group is developing an office project on the site. Phase one includes 12,000 square feet of retail and service space, along with two fast-food restaurant pads. The second phase is designed to cater to small businesses and is planned to include four office buildings from 7,000 to 16,000 square feet each.

Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for nine of the past 10 years, according to an independent survey.

The community is home to eight golf courses, nearly 100 miles of trails, 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, cultural facilities, shopping centers, medical facilities and business parks.

Homes prices start from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom lots ranging from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the mid $100,000s to more than $1 million, and custom homes built are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.

Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s.

To visit the Summerlin Home Finding Center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive; or take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue.

The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
