Sun City resident loyal to hometown
Elbert Loewenstein would walk a thousand miles for the community he loves. The Sun City Anthem resident actually did in 1998 when he embarked on a 50-day trek from Arizona to his 50th high school reunion in Gibbon, Neb. Loewenstein's wife, Betty, followed him by car the entire way. "I did it to challenge myself," Loewenstein said. "My alma mater, Gibbon High School, as well as another local school, Stamford Elementary, had organized an educational foundation to provide scholarships for their students. I wanted to do something spectacular to get the community's attention and raise that money." Loewenstein, pulling a cart bearing his supplies, kept a journal of his adventures on the road and sent his notes to five weekly Nebraska newspapers. Several newspapers reported on his progress each week. "The publicity reminded people about what I was doing, and they sent money to the schools," Loewenstein said. "I raised over $100,000, and a couple hundred thousand has been added to that fund since 1998." People magazine wrote about his journey, among other media outlets. Having retired, the former bank president, Marine Corps veteran and businessman now calls Sun City Anthem his home community. The Loewensteins, high school sweethearts who have been married 54 years., moved to Southern Nevada to be closer to family, having heard about the age-qualified community from friends living in another Del Webb development in Arizona. The Loewensteins chose the Concord model for its rear yard and great room, which they believe is ideal for entertaining. "The house overlooks the golf courses and the city. It's quite spectacular at night," Loewenstein said. The Revere at Anthem Golf Club, located in Henderson's foothills, offers two championship golf courses, which are among the recreational amenities at the community. "Del Webb has a good reputation," Loewenstein said. "We knew about all the activities and we moved here for the two golf courses. We both play golf, normally twice a week." There is also Anthem Center, which serves as a venue for special events, club meetings and dining at Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. It also contains a fitness center with exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, walking tracks and wellness programs. Homes in the community range from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet. Prices start from the high $170,000s to more than $500,000. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, past St. Rose Parkway, to Anthem Parkway and turn left. At Alexandria Drive, turn right. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
