Active lifestyle offered in Summerlin

With an abundance of recreational opportunities, including several youth leagues, Summerlin has been regarded as a great place to raise kids, according to Tom Warden, vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of the master-planned community.

"But it's also a great place for adults who love participating in sports," Warden said.

Leagues offering men's, women's and co-ed softball, soccer, basketball and volleyball have been formed by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association, which is dedicated to providing social, recreational and educational opportunities for residents.

"The adult sport leagues promote the two things Summerlin boasts about -- an active, healthy lifestyle and a greater sense of community," Hughes' President Dan Van Epp said.

"We moved into Summerlin because of its amenities, and we have enjoyed a more active lifestyle here," said Jamie Fields, who participates in community leagues.

"The convenience of the community recreation centers makes it easy to stay in shape and meet others," Cliff Fields added.

Resident Rich Capp said adults of all ages participate.

"The ages range from 17 to 70," Capp said. "It's fun to meet so many diverse people with common interests."

Community amenities include eight golf courses, 105 parks, more than 100 miles of trails, 18 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, and business parks.

Nearly 165 models are open, showcasing single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000.

Custom lots from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre in The Ridges are priced from the high $400,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $1.7 million.

Monthly apartment rents start in the high $700s.

To visit the home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue and head east to Town Center. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
