Summerlin ready for Independence Day

Summerlin will be the site of several patriotic activities beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.

"Summerlin is transformed into one of the most patriotic communities in America during our annual Independence Day celebration," said executive Larry Brocato of The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of the master-planned community. "The community comes together to celebrate all that our country stands for, and the freedoms we enjoy."

Community residents may participate in Hot Shot, a basketball tournament, and the Firecracker 5k and 1-mile fun run/walk.

The 10th annual Patriotic Parade, which is open to the public, gets under way at 9 a.m. next Saturday in The Trails village. Also open to the public is Star Spangled Spectacular, an outdoor concert by the Las Vegas Philharmonic with fireworks at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at The Hills Park.

"With more than 60 major entries and attracting 25,000 viewers, the Summerlin parade has become the valley's most popular Independence Day parade," Brocato said.

The parade will begin at the corner of Hillpointe Road and Hills Center Drive, traveling south toward the Village Center Circle roundabout before heading west on Trailwood Drive. The parade will end at the corner of Trailwood Drive and Spring Gate Lane.

The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to organizing social, educational, and recreational opportunities of residents coordinate the events.

"Planning for the parade is year-round, but the hours of work are well worth it," Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, the council's director of community relations, said. "On parade day, as hundreds of participants dressed in red, white and blue perform for the thousands of paradegoers lining the streets, I feel an overwhelming amount of patriotism and a gratitude for those who make it all possible."

The evening concert will include an appearance by Clint Holmes. Adult admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the gate; admission for children 6-10 is $10 in advance or $15 at the gate. Children 5 and younger will be admitted free.

Summerlin, located along the valley's western edge, ranked as the country's best-selling master-planned community for much of the last decade, according to independent surveys. It is home to parks, trails, schools, houses of worship, shopping and business centers, medical facilities and cultural facilities.

Nearly 120 model homes represent the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Homes are priced from the high $200,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million.

Monthly rents for apartments start in the low $800s.
