Olympic-size pool opens in Summerlin
A 100-meter Olympic-size swimming pool recently opened in The Arbors Sports Park in Summerlin. Situated between Palo Verde High School and the city of Las Vegas Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, the new Veterans Memorial pool was designed, constructed and funded by The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. Upon its completion, Hughes deeded it to the city of Las Vegas, which now owns and operates the facility for public use. "This is a welcome and highly anticipated addition to Summerlin's growing list of recreational amenities," Dan Van Epp, president of Hughes Corp., said. "Having a true Olympic-sized pool is something some communities only dream about. We appreciate the city's cooperation and partnership in handling the ongoing operation of this first-rate facility." According to Gerry Robbins, director of detail planning for Hughes Corp., the pool was designed to fit a variety of needs. "Laps can be swum in the pool both cross-wise and length-wise," Robbins said. "This allows high school teams to swim 25-meter laps, while other swimmers can swim 100- meter laps for their workouts and competitions." Encompassing about 12,400 square feet, the pool ranges in depth from three feet to 12 feet and features two diving boards of varying heights, a shallow play area and handicap access. The Hughes Corp. also funded the construction of a bath house that features men's and women's dressing and shower rooms, meeting rooms, and a reception area. According to Robbins, the pool was constructed so that it can be covered or enclosed with a permanent or temporary structure in the future. The Arbors Sports Park is a 60-acre joint-use facility developed by Hughes Corp., the city of Las Vegas and Clark County School District. The park adjoins the 42-acre campus of Palo Verde High School and includes football, baseball, softball and soccer fields, along with tennis and basketball courts and the city's Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center. Other amenities in the community include eight golf courses, nearly 100 neighborhood and village parks, nearly 100 completed miles of trails, 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, and business parks. Houses, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom lots ranging from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the high $300,000s to more than $1 million, and custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s. To visit the community's home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to the Sahara exit. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
