Retiree stays fit at Sun City Anthem

Suzanne Dorfler just can't sit still. The Sun City Anthem resident spends her time working out at Anthem Center or hiking with the age-qualified community's hiking club.

"Before my husband and I retired, I was a school teacher in Illinois and fit my workouts in after school," Dorfler said. "I'm a firm believer in exercise and its health benefits. It also just makes me feel good."

After she and husband Ronald sold their business, "Dorfler's Meat Market" after operating it for 25 years, the couple decided to head for warmer weather and a change of scenery.

"Coming from Illinois, I'm a flatlander. I never hiked before I moved to Sun City Anthem. Now I'm hiking at 6,000 feet in Zion and all over the west," she said.

"We tried lots of things when we moved here, but we never had as much fun as we do with the hiking club. We could have retired anywhere in the country in an ordinary neighborhood. But there is nothing close to Sun City Anthem. ... The camaraderie of the whole community really makes retirement fun."

She also stays in shape by exercising at the community's fitness center.

"Exercise keeps me fit, feeling good and excited about doing new things," she said. "In July, we're going on a two-week trip that will take us to Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, Glacier National Park and Telluride, Colo. You can't see those kinds of places in Illinois."

The fitness center is located within the community's 77,363-square-foot Anthem Center. The center offers indoor and outdoor pools, walking paths, exercise equipment, free weights, fitness classes, wellness center, and massage studio.

Homes at the community are priced from the low $140,000s to more than $500,000. Nineteen models are featured, measuring from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet.

To visit, Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, and turn left on Anthem Parkway. The model village is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
