KB augments building lesson
KB Home is helping pupils at Garehime Elementary School in Las Vegas learn that big things can come from small ideas. The company is donating time, professional assistance and $2,500 for materials for the school to build a campus bulletin board. "We are taking these students through the entire process from concept to completion," parent volunteer Bill Niver said. "We've already held a schoolwide design contest and determined where the sign will be built." Crisandra Makridis' fourth-grade class is leading the project. They have applied for the building permit, surveyed the land, and learned about blueprints and building codes with KB Home. Area superintendent Margo Williams spent two days with the class, and took them on a field trip to a construction site. "We wanted the students to see firsthand how blueprints are used to build structures, in this case homes," Williams said. Twenty-seven pupils equipped with hard hats toured the builder's Lone Mountain Springs neighborhood, which featured homes in all stages of construction. "This a great lesson for my students. This experience is teaching them about math, planning and the payoffs of hard work," Makridis said. Principles learned from Williams and during the tour will be used on the school's sign project. It is expected to be completed this summer and will be used for school announcements. KB Home offers one-stop shopping at its 22,000-square-foot design center, where buyers may select upgrades and options, and potential buyers receive free financial advice and assistance locating a home in one of the builder's more than 20 valley neighborhoods. The facility is located at 7440 S. Industrial Road, Suite 201, just south of Warm Springs Road.
