New development: Cancer center to open in Summerlin

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

By late 2004, Summerlin will be home to the Nevada Cancer Institute, a nonprofit institution that will offer comprehensive cancer research, education, and treatment to all patients regardless of economic standing.

Daniel C. Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, said the institute will be the state's leading cancer research and treatment facility.

"Not only will this facility become an important part of our immediate community, it will meet critical cancer care needs for all Nevadans," Van Epp said. "Thanks to the Nevada Cancer Institute team, Nevadans will not have to leave home for state-of-the-art cancer care. We commend the NVCI team for their vision, their fortitude and their personal investment in this project that will benefit and enhance the lives of thousands. The Howard Hughes Corp. is pleased to be a small but important part of bringing it to fruition."

Ground was broken last month on the institute's $45 million flagship facility, a 115,000-square-foot, three-story building on 5 acres near Town Center Drive and Interstate 215. It will house research labs, outpatient clinical investigation and patient services, a library, auditorium, counseling and supportive care offices, institute-affiliated doctors' offices, and a restaurant featuring organic food.

"Nevada ranks 10th highest overall in cancer mortality rates among the 50 states, and more than 4,000 Nevadans will die of cancer this year," said Heather Murren, president of the institute. "A nationally recognized, research-based and comprehensive cancer center in Nevada is long overdue."

The institute is building upon the state's existing resources by placing the University of Nevada School of Medicine; University of Nevada, Reno; and University of Nevada, Las Vegas, under its umbrella.

"Nevada Cancer Institute will bring Summerlin's growing and well-respected medical community to a new level," Van Epp said.

Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for 10 of the past 11 years. It aligns the western edge of the valley, and is comprised of villages. There are eight golf courses, more than 100 parks, 107 miles of trails, 16 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, and business parks.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. More than 150 model homes are open.

Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments feature monthly rents starting from the high $700s.
