Sun City home buyer reveres Flag Day

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

Military veteran Stanley Spierer is bullish about Flag Day.

"To me the flag is a symbol of democracy, giving individuals the right to express themselves. It stands for honor, integrity and the right to worship freely. My country is my country," Spierer said.

A platoon sergeant in the First Marine Division during World War II, Spierer's commendations include a Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy crosses, a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. Although disabled as a result of battle wounds, Spierer often shares his story with local schoolchildren. Among his memories is the Guadalcanal campaign.

"The enemy was building an airstrip which was later named Henderson Field," he said. "We were outnumbered 10 to 1 and didn't have any supplies. That battle was a turning point of the first invasion of WW II. We had to stay until air support arrived. Six of us crawled up the hill to a machine gun nest and I knew I would get hit. We did our job."

Spierer was shot in the leg by a machine gun, and was also injured by shrapnel from a grenade.

"It's all about being on the team," he said. "Our flag and the bald eagle are tremendous symbols of our nation, and should be respected."

Spierer is a past state commander for Disabled American Veterans, as well as a member of several veterans organizations.

With Joan, his wife of 54 years, Spierer recently purchased a home at Sun City Aliante, the adult component of the Aliante master-planned community in North Las Vegas.

"We wanted a smaller home," Joan Spierer said. "The Sun City Aliante community is beautiful and new with lot of activities available. Stanley is such a dynamic person, always socializing, and he plays in poker tournaments at the casinos."

The couple selected the 1,424-square-foot Primrose model, which has three bedrooms, a great room and dining area.

"We love the kitchen and the layout," Joan Spierer said, pointing out that the home has plenty of room for visitors, including their three children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Standard features include the Environments for Living energy-efficient building technology, as well as front- and rear-yard landscaping. Homes are priced from the low $160,000s to mid-$240,000s.

Del Webb is developing Sun City Aliante around an 18-hole, 6,900-yard, par-72 municipal golf course.

Resident amenities include a recreation center with tennis and bocce courts, a swimming pool, fitness center, and club and hobby rooms.

To visit, take U.S. Highway 95 to Centennial Parkway, exit east to Sky Pointe Drive and turn right. Turn right at Frontage Road, then left onto Interstate 215. Exit at Aliante Parkway and go north. The sales office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Del Webb is also the developer of Sun City Summerlin, Sun City MacDonald Ranch and the Anthem master-planned community.
