Energy-efficient mortgages benefit buyers, environment
With increased energy costs and rising temperatures, valley residents have become more energy conscious. What many residents don't know, however, is that they can save money with an energy-efficient mortgage, said Cathleen Channel, branch manager of Countrywide Home Loans' Henderson office. The mortgages are designed to recognize lower operating costs of energy-efficient homes, increase affordability and encourage energy-efficient housing. "Consumers can choose to finance and install such upgrades as energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning systems, duct sealing and repair, insulation and energy-efficient windows. These improvements can result in quieter, cleaner and more comfortable homes while reducing utility bills at the same time," Channel said. "Not only do energy- efficient modifications add to the overall value of the home, 100 percent of the costs for the modifications can be financed and paid for throughout the life of the mortgage. Home buyers can also add the savings to their income to qualify for a larger mortgage." Countrywide is a member of Nevada Energy Star Partners, a voluntary coalition of Southern Nevada home builders, developers, retailers, finance companies, energy consultants and utility companies that promote energy saving.
