Summerlin activities calendar full

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

Camp-outs are among the more popular events organized for residents of the Summerlin master-planned community, according to representatives of the Summerlin Council, the nonprofit affiliate of the Summerlin Community Association.

"When Summerlin held its first camp-out nine years ago, there were just a few adventurous families who pitched a tent in the middle of a suburban park, hoping to re-create the magic of a true outdoor camping experience," Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, community relations director for the council, said.

"Today, more than 300 residents regularly show up for what has evolved into one of (our) most successful community events."

The camp-outs are among more than two dozen events that the council organizes each year exclusively for residents.

Due to the success of the camp-outs, more were added to the community's calendar. A Hawaiian-themed event featured fireside hula and limbo dancing, a barbecue, games and island music, while a Halloween camp-out in October included the telling of ghost stories, trick-or-treating and a haunted tent. Another event was based on the "Survivor" television series with camper-friendly skill-and-endurance tests, a trivia game and scavenger hunt.

"Campers really get into it," council coordinator Rachel Oliphant said. "Residents decorate their tents, they wear theme-appropriate apparel, and they plan their camping experience weeks ahead of time. We've even had a few kids celebrate birthdays at the camp-out, bringing all of their invited guests along for a sleepover."

"From the beginning, Summerlin has always been a place where residents have the opportunity to participate in fun and engaging activities," said Tom Warden, an executive for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. "A full calendar has always been part of the Summerlin experience."

The community aligns the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley and comprises villages. Amenities include parks, trails, schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities and business parks.

Nearly 120 model homes showcase the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Prices start from the high $200,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites in The Ridges village are priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million. Monthly rent for apartments starts from the low $800s.
